Classic 263 Now We Are Talking
By Rumbidzai Mashayahanya
In a fast-changing digital world, authenticity is the new currency. This was the core message from digital strategist Tarirai Nunurai, popularly known as Mr. Digital, during his conversation on Pivot Point; a thought-provoking talk show exploring leadership, innovation, and transformation in today’s world.
Nunurai drew a clear distinction between social influencers and what he calls “knowledge expert influencers” whom he classified as individuals with influence that stems not from popularity, but expertise and thought leadership.
“We often celebrate social influencers for their reach, but we underestimate knowledge influencers those with insights that educate, inform, and shape industries,” he said.
“Those are the people who can shift behaviour and drive meaningful change.”
He emphasized that organisations and brands, particularly start-ups and small enterprises, need to invest in cultivating these expert voices if they want to build lasting brand presence and credibility in the digital space.
According to Mr. Digital, visibility alone is no longer enough, hence digital presence must be strategic, intentional and values-driven.
“When it comes to social media, you can’t fake it till you make it,” he warned. “You have to be intentional. You must have a goal you’re driving towards and set smart, measurable targets to achieve it.”
The conversation also touched on Zimbabwe’s digital divide, highlighting the importance of understanding both the tools and the language of digital engagement.
“Institutions often rush to occupy digital spaces without first understanding how those platforms align with their mission or audience” Nunurai said.
He urged brands to avoid the trap of “being everywhere” online. Instead, he advised, they should strategically choose the platforms that serve their objectives and resonate well with their target communities.
“It’s not about being on every platform,” explained Nunurai, also noting that it’s about knowing your audience, understanding what your business needs, and then selecting the most suitable digital spaces to engage effectively.
As Zimbabwe’s digital economy expands, Mr. Digital’s message rings clear: Success in the digital age will depend not on noise, but on knowledge. The rise of expert professional influencers who use their insight and authenticity to guide and empower others could very well redefine how brands grow and connect with audiences.
